Bailiff fees
When a bailiff is collecting, the fees are not the bailiff's to choose: a fixed national ladder prices each stage, and it stacks by stage, not by visit. The first £79 is on the bill before anyone has knocked, and above a set line a percentage joins in — at two of the stages.
Fees and thresholds as made by SI 2026/366, in force 1 May 2026, pulled from the living text 22 July 2026 · legislation.gov.uk
These are the England and Wales scales for enforcement by taking control of goods. Where enforcement began before 1 May 2026, the old scale still applies — £75, £235 and £110 with a £1,500 line, and for High Court writs £75, £190, £495 and £525 above £1,000 — reg 1(3) of SI 2026/366.
Disbursements can sit on top — locksmith, storage, auctioneer — under regs 8 to 10, and in some cases a sum equivalent to VAT, reg 18. Where the debtor is vulnerable, the enforcement stage fee is not recoverable unless the agent first gave an adequate opportunity to get assistance, reg 12.
The knock itself has a clock: at least 14 clear days' notice of enforcement since 1 May 2026, extendable to 28 on a debt adviser's request, reg 6 of the 2013 Regulations. Whether a warrant should have reached this stage at all is a question for advice, and none of it is arithmetic.
For parking penalties this ladder is the last rung; the PCN escalation calculator prices the steps before it.
