IN10 : using a vehicle uninsured against third party risks
Checked 17 July 2026 · How we check our figures
What it means
IN10 is the only code in the insurance section, and its verb is the whole story: using. The keeper letters of the continuous insurance regime travel without points, and IN10 turns on use, a word the courts have read wider than the driving seat, an uninsured car parked on the public road included (case law); the car in the garage without a SORN draws only the database's letters. The 6 to 8 spread splits by route, 6 on the fixed penalty, the higher numbers through a courtroom. Like every 6-point entry it is half the totting distance, and inside the first two years of a licence it is the whole of it.
Points and how long it stays
6 to 8 points.
On the licence for 4 years from the date of the offence.
The usual route
The fixed penalty is 300 pounds and 6 points (gov.uk, checked 2026-07-17).
If it goes to court
In court the fine is unlimited and income-banded, with the 7 and 8 point end of the range and a discretionary ban on the menu; mechanics in the no insurance guide and the fine bands guide.
