UT50 : aggravated taking of a vehicle

What it means
UT50 is the only Theft Act entry on the table: aggravated vehicle-taking, s. 12A Theft Act 1968, the basic taking plus at least one aggravation before recovery, dangerous driving, injury, or damage. The section's reach is its surprise: passengers party to the taking can carry the same conviction, so a UT50 does not prove who drove. It sits on the ordinary 4-year offence clock, unusual company for a code this heavy.

The usual route
Nothing here is dealt with by penalty notice; the case is charged and heard.
If it goes to court
Custody runs to 2 years and rises sharply where death results, s. 12A Theft Act 1968; the fine bands never enter the room.
